Fashion influencer Donovan Harris is a modern day story of how a guy from New Jersey with a simple idea became social media famous. This young up and coming designer is proof that with a bit of know-how and perseverance you can go from small town to global! Check out his interview below:
BC: How many followers do you have on Instagram
DH: At the very moment, I have 13,900. The number does change everyday though. Losing some and gaining some.
BC: How did you grow your following?
DH: When I started out on Instagram, I figured, why have a boring or dry looking page while I have an account? I didn't make it for no reason. So, I would do a bunch of shout outs just about everyday. Meeting different people, gaining relationships with new faces, meeting new friends etc. Once I got into photography, inspired by my little brother, I started taking outfit grid posts and sneaker pictures which, lead to some features and exposure.
BC: How have you used your Instagram followers to your advantage?
DH: I wouldn't use the word "used", but a way of networking. I have a few followers who are pretty huge on Instagram who appreciate my creativity on my page and they would promote me and give me some sort of exposure or recognition for what I post.
BC: What are you aspirations related to fashion?
DH: My biggest aspiration at the moment is to start a successful street wear clothing line. It's turned into a dream just from being inspired by big named brands like Stussy, Supreme, Fear of God, but adding my own style and flavor to it.
BC: How many guys are you working with on your clothing line?
DH: Right now, I don't wanna have too many people. I try to keep it a small circle. I have 4 people who are interested in working with me, three of them are from New York. The fact that they are from New York, they get the advantage to see different styles from the street, fashion looks. Anything that inspires them they'll bring it back to me or the others on the team and we just brainstorm on how we put it in our line.
BC: Who inspires your teams designs?
DH: A lot of different designs we see either on social media or even walking down the street in the city will catch our eye. We try to picture everything then figure out what we can do to make something of ours and make it look just as good as any other big time street brand.
BC: What will be the price range of your clothing line?
DH: Depending on the fabrics and material we end up using for our clothing, it will definitely range. We don't want to use anything cheap. Our clothing will have an amazing quality to it so, it won't be too expensive, but we do want to have our earning come back more than what we spent on the quality.
BC: Have you made any connections/relationships with other people in the fashion industry as a result of your Instagram influence?
DH: Personally,I haven't made any crazy, big time connection or met anybody in person just yet. However, on social media, I've gained a few follows that even surprised me even 'til this day!
BC: Have you worked with any fashion brands/magazines or received any recognition as a result of your popularity online?
DH: I worked with one fellow from Miami, Florida, It didn't work out the way I wanted to, but we got past that and that collection went very well. We both were featured on "The Source's" website for the the collection and I was named the designer. My pictures on Instagram and Tumblr lead to a feature and followbacks from Complex Magazine, Bleacher Report Sneakers, @theefvshion.ri0t, and a bunch of other big names on the Instagram.
BC: You have a second account on Instagram that focuses on sneakers, what inspired that account?
DH: My second account on Instagram was simply inspired by all the other sneaker pages that either featured or followed me. They were what gave me the inspiration to take sneaker photos and to get recognized by such big names like them gave me every reason to start one myself.
