I’m interested in becoming a menswear fashion designer, but I’m a straight black male. I’m concerned as to how well-received that will be in this industry. Has the overall perception against straight men in the fashion industry changed at all?
There are several top menswear designers who are heterosexual, for example, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein & John Varvatos. With regard to your concern about black male designers, although there are not many well-known at this time, there is Virgil Abloh. He is a Ghanian-American Designer who worked with Kanye West & is responsible for the creation of the top Street Wear brand in the market, “Off-White”. He was recently hired as the Creative Director to Louis Vuitton Men. Yes, a straight black male who married a woman with whom he shares two children. The fashion industry has made some social improvements, which we see with his appointment by Bernard Arnaud, the founder & CEO of LVMH to Louis Vuitton.
Overall, we are now beginning to see black Vice Presidents & Creative Directors as well as successful brand Founders like Virgil Abloh, therefore, I say go live your dream. If you ever have any doubts, let his story & massive success be an inspiration to pursue your passion.
