WITHOUT GUIDANCE, KNOWLEDGE CAN COME WITH A STEEP LEARNING CURVE
This is often the greatest issue for independent designers with limited industry experience. As a result, I have witnessed designers make errors that resulted in huge setbacks. Why? A lack of knowledge & in some cases, a big ego. No matter how much you do know, you can never learn enough about the fashion industry and unfortunately, what you don't know could make the difference between having a business in a year or going "belly-up". It takes more than great designs to have a successful label. Yes, it’s true, there are some who have the natural instinct to run a company, but those types are far & few. Moreover, there are some who believe they don’t need any help & will refuse to seek any as a result. On the other hand, others recognize early on that in spite of their desire to have a clothing line, they would rather have the guidance of someone who is more “seasoned” to manage the business while creating new designs. Valentino is a perfect example of the latter who focused on the creative direction while his long time business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, handled the day to day operations.
YOU WILL NEED SOME FORM OF ASSISTANCE FROM AN EXPERT TO BE SUCCESSFUL
If you want more visibility, then you’ll need marketing. Do you need to increase your sales? Then you will need business development. Is your goal to break into the international market? There is a good chance you will need a distribution strategy. The stories you read about a brand going viral due to a large Instagram following are considered an anomaly. In reality, you will more than likely need the resources, expertise & the connections of a fashion business consultant for increased brand exposure.
THE HARD WORK IS JUST BEGINNING
I have heard some designers say that once their brand is launched, they can relax. What they often don’t realize is this is when the hard work truly begins! You will have to meet customer demands as well as customer service needs & manage product inventory. If you are shipping internationally, you need to stay on top of logistics. Are you tracking your finances? What are you plans for the next collection? There are a lot of moving parts to running a brand. Most independent designers are operating as “one-man” shows. As a result, these demands can become overwhelming & ultimately slowdown the creative process of bringing new designs to market. It is important to recognize the level of demands & responsibility, but if you are committed, it can work out well!
