Okay, usually when you think of a brand, I am certain that a product or service comes to mind. Lately, there has been quite a bit of talk about personal branding. If you haven't read my previous post about it, then you must have heard the term floating around, somewhere. Well, what I want to share with you is, personal branding has become the standard, especially, in the competitive world of fashion.
So, what the heck is it exactly?
Let me put it this way, your character, credentials and professional reputation are now seen as a product. The question is, what do you want your personal brand to say? Branding is the message of who you are when you aren't in the room so to speak. If you don't take control of your image, you are leaving your brand wide open for damage. As a result, this can limit career opportunities and professional advancement. In many cases, before an interview with a fashion company, recruiters will check out your LinkedIn & any other social media accounts to get a sense of your "vibe". Are you active on Instagram? How is your "feed" looking? Do you have a large following? What are you posting? Don't even think about posting those drunk pics from Ibiza! Remember, whatever you post, can & will be used against you in a professional capacity. Just a heads up, if you are not on social media this is also seen as a negative. Fashion companies want to see how savvy you are with the latest technology and social media platforms. I remember during my interview with Coach, the VP, Manager & Supervisor of Product Development confessed that they had already looked me up on LinkedIn & Instagram before I arrived. They were so impressed with me during that meeting I got the job within 36 hours. Weeks later, a colleague told me that the VP had passed my resume around the department & shared the impression I made during the meeting.
I am proof that personal branding is a worthy investment. If you read the story about my journey, then you know that when I started out, I had zero experience in the fashion world. However, with the right personal branding, I was able to work with some of the top fashion companies in the world and at the very least interview with others like Ralph Lauren in the early stages of my career.
This industry is super competitive and with so many professionals fighting for their position, what will your personal brand be?
